DA MOTORSPORT is proud to launch the first E46 turbocharger kits in the world. DA MOTORSPORT E46 turbocharger kit  transforms your 3.30ci into an E46 M3 killer, a torque monster with 448nM (329 lb/ft).  Stage 1 turbocharged 3.30ci has 22 %  more torque than E46 M3.  And 400 nM of this torque is available from 3000 rpm onwards

Dyno results of stage 1 turbocharged 3.30ci

- 353 horsepower @ 5881 rpm, at the flywheel

- 448 nM @ 4934 rpm (329 lb/ft)
, at the flywheel

-
These power figures are attained with a standard rear muffler. With DA MOTORSPORT track muffler 360 horsepower is expected. Track muffler is under production and optional

- A 4WD Vamag dyno is used to measure power of 3.30ci turbo

-
As shown on dyno graph and dyno table, 400 nM (294 lb/ft) of torque is available from 3000 rpm onwards. This is an advantage  of turbochaging 3.30ci where lots of torque is produced at low and mid engine speeds. With 400 nM of torque from 3000 rpm  onwards, you do not need to downshift during a take over or during uphill driving

E46 3.30ci turbo is faster than E46 M3. Below is a comparison of E46 3.30ci turbo vs. E46 M3 standard

Turbocharger

- Garrett turbocharger, custom made according to DA MOTORSPORT specifications

-
We have tested different turbochargers on E46 3.30ci in order to have the earliest spool.  Full boost of 7,4 psi comes on at 2800  rpm and full boost is preserved until maximum engine speed of 6400 rpm

-
The custom made turbocharger is spinning at an rpm, where its efficiency does not fall below %76. An  efficiency of 76% combined with a large front mount intercooler avoids detonation and allows 7,4 psi of  boost pressure at 10,2:1 compression ratio

-
Stage 1 and 2 E46 turbocharger kits include an intercooler wih a large surface area. A large surface area cools down   charged air temperatures as close to the ambient temperature as possible

- Large intercooler surface area allows prolonged top speed drives such as 260 km/h at hot climates

- Large intercooler surface area lowers exhaust gas temperatures which in turn keeps the exhaust valves cooler

- Intercooler and front bumper installed on 3.30ci turbo

Blow Off System

- E46 330ci turbocharger kit stage 1 and stage 2 include a modified TURBOSMART blow off valve

-
Turbosmart blow off valves modified by DA MOTORSPORT reduce turbo spool up time. There is a substantial improvement in response from your turbo between gearshifts. Boost comes on earlier an this enables more power and torque at lower engine speeds

- Modified blow off valve installed on 330ci turbo by DA MOTORSPORT

Intake system and air cleaner

-
DA smooth bore cold air intake system and K&N air cleaner deliver a lot of air to the turbocharger for maximum power and torque

-  Air cleaner is positioned to inhale cool air, not the hot air under the bonnet

-  Air cleaner's size is very important.  E46 3.30ci turbocharger kits come with an air cleaner that is big enough

-  Turbocharger air intake and the turbocharger give a fantastic concert

Engine management system TSI

- TSI engine management system is used to program the software of 353 horsepower turbocharged E46 330ci

-
TSI is not a piggyback system but we use TSI in parallel with the standard E46 ECU.  The reason why we keep the standard E46 OEM ECU in place is to preserve vanos control, immobilizer, air conditioning, automatic transmission control, SMG control and diagnostic features

-
On DA MOTORSPORT E46 turbocharger kits, standard air flow meter is removed and a 22 psi internal map sensor is installed to measure the amount of air. Map sensor based software enables smoother drivability on turbocharged engines. 3.30ci turbo has the drivability of a BMW 7.60iL. Crusing, partial  throttle,  transition from vacum into boost pressure and full throttle are very smooth. In fact, TSI enables to program 168 individual load points and this is one of the reasons why we offer a perfect software, 168 individual load points are mapped separately

-
The turbocharger pushes more air molecules into the M54 B30 and this requires to set ideal air fuel ratios and ignition timing. TSI enables to set air fuel ratios by changing injector duty cycle. For adding more fuel we enter a larger injecor duty cycle value and for decreasing fuel we enter a smaller injector duty cycle value

-
Ideal air fuel ratios change according to boost pressure, engine speed and TPS (throttle position). With TSI we are able  to set air fuel ratios at any boost  pressure, engine speed, and TPS according to our wishes.  For example, at idle we dial  in an air fuel ratio of 14,5:1. And at full throttle, where boost comes on, we enrich air fuel ratios in order to have the maximum performance

-
Ignition map is programmed with TSI software, some load points are advanced and some load points are retarded. A beautiful  effect of ignition timing mapping is the faster spool up times. With a special ignition map, Garrett spools up faster and full boost  comes on earlier, in fact we have full boost at 2800 rpm

-
TSI engine management system comes with the M54B30 wiring harness. For foreign country customers we send the wiring harness and installation instructions.  All you need to do is connect the wires, plug-in TSI and drive. No re-mapping is needed, as  TSI comes preprogrammed by DA MOTORSPORT.  Just plug in TSI and drive the 353 horsepower turbocharged E46 3.30ci

Decompression Kit

-
Decompression kit is required for octane levels which are lower than 96.  For those who can fill with 96 octane and higher, decompression kit is not needed

-  A multi layer steel head gasket lowers compression ratio from 10,2:1 down to 9,8:1 for octane levels up to 96

-
DA MOTORSPORT head studs and nuts replace standard head bolts to ensure perfect clamping of the cylinder head. DA head studs clamp the M54 B30 cylinder head onto the block

Exhaust system

-
The first component of E46 turbocharger exhaust system is a cast iron exhaust manifold. DA  MOTORSPORT cast iron exhaust  manifold accomodates custom made Garrett turbocharger

-
Second component of E46 turbocharger exhaust system is the down pipe. Downpipe is connected to the turbocharger turbine  outlet and connects the turbocharger with the mid pipe.  E46 turbocharger downpipe is made of stainless steel 316 as stainless  steel 316 has a high corrosion resistance

-
To extract more power and torque out of E46 turbocharger kits DA Team is producing a "track mid pipe" and a "track rear muffler"

- Track mid pipe is under production, stainless steel 316.  Optional

- Track rear muffler is under production, stainless steel 316.  Optional

Note: track exhaust system is designed to be used on track.  Track exhaust system is not street legal

Ignition Modifications

- DA ignition amplifier helps to charge ignition coils faster (optional, not included in the E46 turbocharger kits)

-
Ignition coils, seen on the photo above, increase secondary spark current by 100% and release about 4 times as much energy  at the initial moment of spark (ignition coils are optional, not included in E46 turbocharger kits)

- Racing spark plugs, which are colder than original spark plugs are installed on 353 horsepower 3.30ci turbo

- Racing spark plugs remove heat out of cylinder head faster, spark plugs are optional, not  included in E46 turbocharger kits

- DA MOTORSPORT E46 turbocharger kit "ignition package" is shown on the photo above

-
Ignition amplifier, ignition coils and colder spark plugs should be used together, these parts are optional and not included in the  main turbocharger kit

Fuel system

- DA MOTORSPORT fuel pressure regulator

-
Note: there is no "rising rate fuel pressure regulator" in our E46 turbocharger kits. Fuel pressure is kept constant at all engine  speeds and loads

- DA MOTORSPORT fuel filter for fine filtering and less restrictive fuel flow

Drive train modifications

-
Standard E46 clutch system cannot deliver the torque of the turbocharged M54B30 to the wheels. It is the torque, not horsepower that is used for measuring the capacity of a clutch kit.  448 nM (329 lb/ft) of torque requires a  heavy duty clutch kit

- We offer two different clutch kits for turbocharged E46: SS and SD clutch systems

-
SS clutch kits are "Street and Strip", consist of a heavy duty pressure plate and an organic disc. SS equipped E46 BMWs are very easy to drive in stop and go traffic

- 240 mm organic disc diameter for 3.30ci

- SS clutch disc and pressure plate for E46 are shown on the photo above

-
SD clutch kits are "Street and Drag" where we offer a heavy duty pressure plate and a "sintered metal and organic" clutch disc. SD clutch discs have four cintered pucks and four organic pucks. The additional four organic pucks minimize the vibrations during stop and go traffic. SD equipped E46 BMWs are very easy to drive. SD clutch kit is for the 1/4 mile addicted enthusiasts  and track racer

- 240 mm "cintered and organic" disc for 3.30ci

- SD clutch kit for E46 3.30ci shown on the photo above

- Note: Clutch kits are optional, not included in the turbocharger kit

Turbocharge or supercharge E46?

-
The main advantage of our E46 turbocharger kits compared to E46 supercharger kits is the"engine speed at which full boost is produced". DA MOTORSPORT E46 turbocharger kits produce full boost at 2800 rpm whereas any other E46 supercharger kit produces full boost at near the maximum engine speed, which is 6000 rpm. This disadvantage of superchargers stem from the "centrifugal  supercharger's" boost build up characteristic and cannot be improved

-
As our E46 turbocharger kits produce full boost at 2800 rpm and as supercharger systems produce full boost at near the maximum engine speed, turbocharged E46 produce much more power and torque from 2800 rpm up to maximum engine speed, given that DA MOTORSPORT turbocharged E46 and supercharged E46 run at the same boost pressure

-
In addition to producing boost at much lower engine speeds, turbochargers do not take away power from the crankshaft. Superchargers rub, or take away power from the engine, as they are belt driven. This is why a turbocharged E46 at X psi of boost pressure will make more power than a supercharged E46 at X psi of boost pressure

- A rough calculation of the power loss on a supercharged 3.30ci:

3.0L E46 3.30ci engine is supercharged at 7 psi and the supercharger has a 70 % adiabatic efficiency. Belt efficiency is 97%.  Under these conditions the supercharger takes away 24 horsepower at 7 psi of boost pressure. If we dial in more boost  pressure, the 3.30ci supercharged at 10 psi looses 39 horsepower. As a result, increasing boost pressure on any  superceharged engine also increases the power that is taken away by the supercharger. This symptom does not exist on  turbocharged engines and this is why turbocharged BMWs make more power than supercharged BMWs

-
Altitude power loss compensation is another adavante of turbochargers. Your 231 horsepower 3.30ci does not produce 231 horsepower at 10.000 feet. At sea level air has a density of 0,0765 lb per  cubic feet, and at 10.000 feet air density falls down to 0,0565 lb per cubic feet.
E46 3.30ci makes, 231 hp x (0,0565/0,0765) = 171 horsepower at 10.000 feet. The power loss can be compensated with a turbocgarger and base power can be brought to 231 hp, and with more boost pressure 353horsepower can be achived at high altitudes

-
On high altitudes superchargers cannot produce the power of a turbocharger. This means superchargers cannot push enough air at high altitudes and they must be revved harder. Sometimes revving the superchargers faster does not bring more power as the supercharger is overrevved, it only heats the air without increasing the amount of air. At this point turbochargers can easily compensate for the decreased amount of air density by revving harder. As turbocgargers can rev faster than superchargers they can pack in the required amount of air into the engine. Many trucks are turbocharged to compensate for the loss of air density at higher altitutes. This is another beautiful feature of turbochargers. With DA MOTORSPORT turbocharger kits, E46 owners living in high altitudes can make the same power as if they were at sea level
