Hot Compacts and Imports (HCi) Builds a 500hp 2.0L Zetec, Sean Hyland Motorsport Shortblock

As seen in the latest edition of HCi, Sean Hyland Motorsport supplied the fortified shortblock that achieved 459.9HP to the wheels using 26psi delivered by a GT66 Turbo.

Its not as easy as it sounds, just a solid block and a turbo; much preparation was needed to reach that HP range. The peak hp on a stock Zetec is around 130hp. To reach a goal of 500hp at the flywheel, a person would have to be putting out around 42psi with the turbo, which isn't feasible.

To reach 500hp, the Zetec engine had to increased to about 200hp naturally aspirated. With the amount of performance equipment available on the market these days, that isn't out of the question.

To start with, the cylinder head flow was increased by porting and polishing. To match the new port job, the stock cams were removed and replaced with more aggressive cams, increasing the lift and duration. Replacing the cams also increased the 5400 rpm operating range of the Zetec by 2000 rpm. At the higher RPMs is were the peak torque occurs. Matched with a short runner intake, the increased torque from shifting the torque curve was achieved.

The GT66 turbo was supplied by Innovative Turbo, matched with a stainless tubular header and other necessary hardware to mount the system to the Borla Cat-back.

Next step was the fuel system. The return-less fuel system would not work at this power level that they were trying to achieve, so a return-style system was constructed using a fuel cell, Vortech inline T-Rex fuel pump, feeding 72lb injectors.

For ignition, a Crane HI-6 ignition amplifier and Denso Iridium plugs were added.

Controlling everything was a Pectel engine management system, with an A'PEXi Super AVC-R electronic boost controller.

After hours on the dyno, they achieved 460hp at the wheels. While they were not out of boost or flow potential, they reached the limit of their fuel system, cutting the party short.
