Back in the 1980s, David Hasselhoff fought crime as Michael Knight with the help of a talking, computer-controlled T-Top Firebird Trans Am called the Knight Industries Two Thousand, better known as KITT. With Hollywood going back to the 80s for ideas for new shows and movies, it was almost inevitable that NBC (or someone in the NBC Universal fold) would do a rework of Knight Rider. But this time out, Knight will roll in a Ford Mustang.
The new Knight Rider and the car behind it, which the boys over at Jalopnik have been in a lather over for the past couple of weeks, debuts on Feb. 17 as a two-hour, made-for-TV-movie. The KITT car star in question is a Ford Mustang Shelby GT500KR, this time as the Knight Industries Three Thousand. Three variants of the GT500KR will actually be used in the movie -- the standard KITT Hero, a juiced up high-speed Kitt Attack, and a driverless KITT Remote. The new KITT can hack into any computer and can shift its shape and its color using nanotechnology, because no modern show is complete without its fair share of overkill.
Starring in the movie will be Justin Bruening, Deanna Russo, Sydney Tamiia Poitier, and Bruce Davison. Voice talent for KITT will be provided by Will Arnett and Hasselhoff will reprise his role as Michael Knight in a guest role. While there has been some speculation that the movie will eventually spin off into a series, a Ford PR rep connected with the project we talked to says that is not the case -- at least for now.
