After parting ways over 10 years ago, Scott Carmody’s popular
34’ Ford Rod is back
in Business. So many cars have come and gone through Scott’s garage that he has trouble remembering them all, but this is one of his favourites, known as the Californian Kid.
More than qualified to be classed as a ‘street rodder’, some of Scott’s previous and current rides include a 56’ chopped Ford custom-line and a 36’ chopped Ford roaster. The garage has also housed an LC GTR Torana and among others a 400ci Chev powered LX hatchback

History
Built in 1990 by John Traverna Chassis, the 34 Ford found early success at the drag strip. Running 10.4s at 126mph was enough to see Scott's ride become the quickest naturally aspirated small block powered rod in the land.
“In 1993 the rod was racing at Heathcote Park for the Bendigo Swap Meet Drags. The engine had a haemorrhage an in a big accident it took out another 34’ coupe with the Californian Kid hitting the wall and wiping out the front. It was sold off the back of the tow truck” recites Scott.
It wasn’t until February of this year that Scott would see the Ford again. He explains, “I’d heard it went to South Australia somewhere and Traverna had been hired again to repair the front end. He also added an inch onto the wheelbase.”
“A well known hot rodder, Shane Winnen from Port Fairy purchased the car in mid 1995 but work commitments prevented him from ever getting stuck into it. Shane approached me at the Hot Rod Run as he knew I was a drag racer and told me about the car. I went and had a look at it and brought it home with me. We completely rebuilt it in eight weeks!”

Bow tied Ford
A Chev powered Ford you say? Scott couldn’t care less. “The 400 Chev is a great engine as they make easy power and there are so many parts available for them.”
The engine itself was machined by North Geelong Engines and pieced together by Scott. The short block features a Scat 9000 billet crank and h-beam rods sweeping capacity to 406 cubes. Probe flat top pistons in Total Seal rings see compression sitting at 12.0:1, but Scott is still able to run the Chev on premium unleaded fuel. The cam profile is of Crane origin. The F260 spec is listed at 555-intake and 578-exhaust lift and 260@0.50-inch duration. Scott also called on Crane for pushrods, lifters and valve springs. The heads themselves are of AFR 210 design and house Yella Terra shaft rockers.
The exhaust arrangement was probably the easiest part of the build in a way. Scott happens to be the face behind Exhaust Bros in North Geelong. “The power pipes are custom made and are computer dyno spec’d by engine components for optimum power output”. Being a straight line machine, there’s no mufflers so the twin 3.5-inch straight through system is bloody loud!

On the intake side, Scott’s used a tried and true 1050cfm Gold Claw Demon carby mounted on a Super Victor intake manifold. The engine is easily accessible and looks good due to plenty of braided line and hidden wiring. “I’ve also installed a Moroso vacuum pump to generate negative crankcase pressure which helps with ring seal,” adds Scott.
The driveline is pretty much what you’d expect it to be. A 2-speed Power glide complete with trans-brake and 5500rpm TCE stall converter help launch the rod skyward off the start line. Power is send rearwards through an A1 Automotive race tail shaft whist the rear end consists of a 4.57:1 Strange full spooled and shortened 9-inch with 35-spline Summers Bros axels
Aiding traction are fully adjustable Strange Engineering rear struts inside A1 springs as well as much needed adjustable 4-link bars. The front struts are oddly sourced from a Mazda Capella and modified to fit. Centreline Pro Stock 4.5-inch front rims and front runners help keep Scott in a straight line on the drag strip. The rears are beefy 13-inch units that sit on big 33x15-inch MT Drag slicks. Scott has only had the rod to the blacktop a couple of times since the rebuild and early signs are good with the best time to date a pretty easy 9.79 at 128mph, Scott admits the gearing needs some sorting. Power is estimated to be in the 580hp region.

Perhaps the strongest aesthetic area is the interior. The ACR Race sport seats finished in black vinyl look great against the bright red roll cage and tin work. A neat touch is the custom made chain wheel. “I wanted the shifter to look aggressive so I went for the TCI Outlaw model”. Gauge Works completed the wiring and installed the Holley electronic Ignition controller. Autometer water temperature and oil pressure gauges sit along side a VDO Extreme tacho.
“The rod will get a transplant soon as I have another 420 cube small block nitrous engine ready to go to the tune of 900hp. That should be fun
